Chester Police Department

The Chester Police Department is committed to the preservation of public safety and peaceful order in our community. It is with pride that we build public trust and partner with the community to protect persons and property, maintain order, and promote traffic safety. We strive to develop partnerships to address neighborhood concerns, prevent crime and protect persons and property while respecting the rights of all. There are 28 certified officers and three administrative staff members in the Chester Police Department.

Chester Public Works Department

The public works department provides for a safe, clean, and healthy environment within the City. The department services include yard waste services, bulky waste collection, recycling, street and right of way services, code enforcement and construction oversight. Public works is responsible for responding to citizen inquiries relating to the various services of the department and sets standards for street and sidewalk maintenance and repair, and right of way and storm water maintenance. There are 17 full-time employees in the Public Works department.

Evergreen Cemetery

The City Public Works department is also responsible for the grounds upkeep and maintenance for Evergreen Cemetery. According to city records, Evergreen Cemetery was established in 1858 and is located on Cemetery Street. The cemetery is open to the public.

Chester Fire Department

The Chester Fire Department provides fire protection and other emergency response services to the residents, businesses, and industries of the Chester Fire District.  The Chester Fire District has an approximate 34 square mile service area, located in the center of Chester County, and includes the City of Chester municipality. The department has an ISO rating of 2/10, which is effective on September 1, 2015. The fire department is a combination department with 27 paid employees and an average of 16 volunteer/part-time firefighter positions.

The department’s staff consists of a full time paid fire chief, fire marshal, and administrative assistant. These positions work a normal 8:30 am til 5:00 pm, Monday thru Friday schedule. The fire chief and fire marshal also respond to emergency incidents as needed or required. The department has 24 paid shift personnel and an average of 16 volunteer/part-time firefighter positions.

Chester Municipal Court

The Municipal Court is an independent branch of City government established by City Council and is responsible for the administration of justice within the jurisdiction of the City. Municipal Court is a summary court under the authority of the unified court system of the State of South Carolina and as such adjudicates misdemeanor violations of city and state laws. The Municipal Court is subject to the directives of the South Carolina Administration Office.

The Court is committed to providing those we serve with courteous, prompt and efficient customer service, consistent with principles of due process and equality under the law. The Court is staffed with 3 part-time judges, and two clerks.
